Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Jaya Bachchan and Paresh Rawal in a dark comedy about two sets of parents determined to marry off their respective children. In this spirited comedy from director Vivek Agnihotri, two sets of parents with one thing in common - they both want their children to marry - go about the task in their own way. One set consists of a strict Punjabi father, Bachchan (Amitabh) and his headstrong daughter. Daughter's prospective father-in-law arranged for her via a matrimonial website. The other set, consisting of a learned but cantankerous father (Paresh Rawal) and his less-than-bright son. The film is an adaptation of the novel "Nayee Padosan", which was written by Balwant Singh and subsequently adapted into a Hindi film in 1989 titled "Patthar Ke Sanam". The story has been told in many Indian films and TV serials. It also inspired the 2007 Bollywood movie "Mere Dad Ki Maruti" with Hrithik Roshan playing Jayantabhai Patel and Sunny Deol playing Jai Jayantabhai Patel, respectively. The plot of the film varies from that of the novel and its film adaptation. The plot centers on Jayantabhai (Sunny Deol) and his bride-to-be, Aarti (Aishwarya Rai). Jayantabhai's father is a Punjabi man who believes in arranged marriages and loves his daughter very much. He believes that if he wants to see his daughter get married, then it is necessary for him to find her a suitable groom with plenty of wealth and prestige - which means he needs to find her a wealthy businessman's son from Mumbai. The father's search results in finding Aarti with her childhood friend Ajit. The two young lovers are delighted at their marriage, but life throws them a curveball when Jayantabhai is forced to marry Amitabh Bachchan's daughter, Tina (Jaya Bachchan). The reason for this unexpected situation is that Aarti has left Jayantabhai at the temple following her father's refusal to allow her to marry him. The two fathers decide to "share" their children so they can both get what they want. But the story takes an interesting turn when the fathers decide to continue sharing their children even after their weddings, because neither son nor daughter is willing to give up what he/she has in Mumbai for life in Delhi. The film was released on 10 July 2002.
